Over the past two years while I was in college, I stopped watching movies on Netflix on a regular basis. Just over a week ago I had the pleasure of watching a television series that originally began airing on the Hallmark Channel in January 2014. When Calls the Heart is a period television series based on a book of the same name by Janette Oke.
I LOVED IT!
Janette Oke is a Canadian writer who was born during the Great Depression. The author is a devout “born again” Christian who has written over 75 inspirational novels. When Calls the Heart is the first book in her Canadian West Series. I never read any of Janette Oke’s books before, but I ordered When Calls the Heart from Amazon. I cannot wait to read the original story.
This fabulous new series stars Erin Krakow as Elizabeth Thatcher, Daniel Lissing as Constable Jack Thornton, and Lori Loughlin as Abigail Stanton. Another regular on the show is Jack Wagner who plays Bill Avery and Abigail’s mysterious love interest. The developing love between Jack and Elizabeth is so sweet and pulls you right into the story. Elizabeth is a wealth young woman from the city who studied to become a teacher. After graduating from college she accepts a teaching position in a far away mining town called Coal Valley. Coal Valley has none of the comforts that Elizabeth is used to like indoor plumbing and servants to help you get dressed. Elizabeth is no spoiled and whiny rich girl though. She has spunk, but is really sweet and comes to love her new life in Coal Valley.
Of course nothing can add to a storyline like a good old romance. Jack and Elizabeth’s relationship does not get off to a good start, but there is no denying the chemistry and attraction between the two. I love the open and honest exchange of feelings between these two characters as their friendship develops.
The constable sometimes goes to Abigail Stanton for advise on how to deal with Elizabeth. Abigail is a very wise and strong woman, and many people in Coal Valley look up to her. She is a great role model.
Coal Valley does have its resident villain in the way of businessman Henry Gowen, played by Martin Cummins. Gowen is a cold and heartless man whose shoddy safety practices caused the death of many coal miners in Coal Valley.
I highly recommend that you check out When Calls the Heart if you haven’t already. All 12 episodes of season 1 can be streamed on Netflix and Amazon. Strangely enough season 2 just started in April. You can watch it on the Hallmark Channel or stream it on Amazon for a small fee. Season 2 is not yet available on Netflix since it just started and is still ongoing. There has been a few changes made to season 2 which I will talk about in another post. I don’t like the changes at all, but I am still managing to enjoy the show.
The series was developed by Michael Landon Jr and is filmed in Vancouver, Canada.
