instead of finishing up my degree in December, I have one more full year to go. I was planning on busting my butt to do everything I need to do in order to finish by the end of this year. However, when I thought about it some more, I decided to slow things down.
First of all, I have a full-time job now. There is no way that I can work and do everything that I need to do in order to be done by December. I had 8 Prior Learning Assessment essays (PLA) to write. Since the spring term ended I managed to write 3 of them. Each one was very time-consuming. In some ways I found it more challenging to work on those essays than taking a course. The first one I wrote was on Payroll Administration. The second one was on Spirituality and Metaphysics, The third was on Creative Writing. I did start a fourth one on Historic Preservation, but I will not get to finish that one for a while since the fall semester begins on September 8th. Seven of the PLA’s are worth 4 credits each. One is for eight credits. That left two courses for me to take for four credits each this semester, and then I would be done. Got that straight or did I confuse you?
There is no way that I am going to quit my job because I truly do love it, and I needed to get my life back on track financially. It feels great to not only work at a place that I love, but I can now pay my bills without stressing out. It is also nice to be able to go see a movie, eat out once in a while and buy myself some nice pieces of clothing.
After writing the first three PLA’s I was burned out. I will complete the PLA on Historic Preservation, but I just don’t have it in me to write anymore. I mentioned to my faculty adviser that I would rather just take courses instead, so that is what I am doing. I registered for three courses this semester. During winter break I will finish the fourth PLA, and then take the last 3 courses that I need. I cannot walk the stage until next June anyway, so that was another incentive for me not to rush to finish school at the end of this year. Some people may not care about graduation, but I worked my butt off to earn my degree. There is no way that I would ever pass up the graduation ceremony, and walking the stage to be handed my degree. I look forward to it with much joy.
The three courses that I am taking this semester are:
1. This Thing Called Love
2. Blogging and Digital Presentation
3. Austen and James
All three courses are independent studies, and I am very excited about them all. For Austen and James, I have to read Pride and Prejudice, and The Portrait of a Lady. I read Pride and Prejudice before, but this will be my first time reading The Portrait of a Lady.
For This Thing Called Love, I have to read Wuthering Heights, Romeo and Juliet, After the Fall, The Song of Achilles, Cyrano De Bergerac, Medea, Song of Solomon, the stories of Adam and Eve, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachel, David and Bathsheba, and Samson and Delilah. Also Troilus and Criseyde, and Till We Have Faces. It is a very good thing that I love to read…..HA! I am really looking forward to reading all of these stories more in-depth and with a critical eye. I am getting a head start on all this reading NOW.
The Blogging and Digital Presentation course is going to really feed my creative side. It will be my first time taking a formal course on the subject. I think this course will be invaluable to me. Having an online presence is so important today if you are on any type of career path.
Wish me luck….
